NCDA Home Page

The Nasir Community Development Agency (NCDA) is a non-profit indigenous, non-sectarian and non-political organization. It was established in Kenya in 1999 to assist the people of South Sudan in the Upper Nile region. It's purpose is to help the community gain access to humanitarian aid programs, supporting education and primary health programs.

About NCDA Australia

In 2003 the NCDA established a branch in Melbourne with the objective of breaking down barriers that cause marginalisation of newly-arrived South Sudanese refugees in Australia as well as supporting the work of NCDA in Southern Sudan through fundraising.  NCDA Australia has given special attention to the educational needs of our young people who are the future leaders of our community.

Under the new Management of David Kong and a new-look committee, NCDA Australia aims to raise funds for projects both here in Australia for Sudanese refugees and migrants and for the NCDA in Sudan to benefit the Sudanese People.

During the many years of conflict in South Sudan, education has been neglected as food and health concerns took precedent to save lives. The results have been an illiterate society while only a few found their way to Ethiopia and Kenya to access education as refugees.

Despite the recent peace deal that ended the 21 years conflict, the instability in South Sudan continues to discourage Internal Displaced Person (IDP's) and refugees from returning home. UNHCR has been involved in bringing refugees and IDP's to the region from the refugee camps. The issue of returnees has created an urgent need to address the existing need for education.

Schools do not have basic facilities like desks. Books are not available for some classes. Class rooms are few and a majority of pupils learn under trees and they strain a lot since they have to write on their laps while sitting on the ground. In the few class rooms, pupils are usually congested and the effectiveness of a teacher is greatly reduced.

Our Core Values

NCDA aims to contribute to the strengthening of networks that promote grassroots participation and to mobilize South Sudanese communities to identify and respond to their own identified rehabilitation and development needs. NCDA hopes to achieve community participation by working in collaboration with the government of South Sudan, local authorities and aid agencies to encourage action in education and health.

Our Aims

  • To advocate for the needs of disadvantaged youth and families, through the development of innovative youth and parenting projects in the areas of recreation, education/training and employment
  • To provide community leaders and facilitators, with ideas on addressing youth and family issues within the community
  • To work directly with young people and families to develop positive community support systems which impact positively on family well-being and life skills
  • To raise money, through fundraising campaigns, donations, grants and subscription fees which support the activities of the NCDA in both Australia and South Sudan
  • To provide material aid assistance in situations of crisis or chronic distress and to work toward the development of long-term solutions
  • To raise awareness in government and non-government organizations, the private sector, church groups and the general community regarding the needs of the South Sudanese community in Australia and South Sudan
  • To develop and maintain relationships with our partners and donors who provide channels for mutual growth and action

Community Awareness

Initiated by NCDA, "Experiences of Children in South Sudan" is a short film depicting the work of NCDA. The film contains images of youth. It shows their determination for dependence and their persistence for education in rural areas of South Sudan. NCDA was launched in the presence of Mr. George Lekakis of VMC, DHS, SCAV, SCRMRC, VFST, Red Cross and EACAV.
